Hand-carved Valentine

.

I was so excited to demonstrate hand-carving Smoothfoam sheets at the Craft & Hobby Association trade show this month. It was fun to show craft retailers and designers just how easy it is to cut Smoothfoam into intricate shapes. This hand-carved Valentine is actually pretty easy to make…once you try your hand at carving Smoothfoam, you’ll be hooked like me!

Supplies:

12″ square Smoothfoam Scrapbook Mount sheet
1″ thick scrap sheet of Smoothfoam
12″ square cork tile – The Board Dudes
Sulky Stick’n Carve Printable Transfer sheets
Black FolkArt Chalkboard Paint
Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue
DecoColor Paint Pens – opaque white, blue, red, yellow, orange
Hot Wire Foam Factory Hot Knife & Mini-Scroll Table
Paint brush
Picture hanging hook

1.  Draw the words “Be My Valentine” on paper to fit centered within an 8″ square, allowing a 2″ border all the way around. Add a large winged heart and two smaller hearts to the drawing as shown. Scan the drawing into your computer and then print it out on one 8-1/2″x11″ transfer sheet. Peel the backing release paper and apply the transfer sheet to the center of the 12” Smoothfoam sheet. Draw, scan and print out a second heart (to layer on top of the winged heart) on another transfer sheet and apply it to the Smoothfoam scrap piece. Leave the transfer sheets on the foam to cut through.

2.  Use the hot knife tool to poke a pilot hole in the Smoothfoam sheet in each area which will be cut out.

3.  Carefully carve out the Smoothfoam sheet with the mini-scroll table. You will need to unthread and insert the wire into each pilot hole to make each interior cut. Cut out the extra heart piece too. Peel the transfer sheets off the foam when you’re finished cutting.

4.  Carve border lines and doodles to the carving and heart with the hot knife tool.

5.  Paint the carving and heart black. Let dry before adding one more coat of paint.

6.  Color in your carving and heart with paint pens and then glue the heart on top of the center of the carving.

7.  Glue the carving to the cork tile and glue a picture hanging hook to the back, or display on an easel.
